Student Engineer – Vivian Pham
Studing Bachelor of Civil Engineering (Scholars, Honours) at the University of Wollongong, her interests lies in examining the relationship between engineering and its social context to ensure that designs appropriately meet the needs of stakeholders involved.
Completed in Jun 2016, Vivian’s honours thesis was titled “Investigation of Social-Economic Vulnerability in Flood-Prone-Jakarta”, which constructed and tested a Vulnerability, and Resilience index that incorporated both physical and social elements of a household system. This honours research involved a 2-week funded (UOW Travel grant) trip to Jakarta in Nov/Dec 2015 with the SMART Facility and support from PetaJakarta.org. In Jan/Feb 2015, she also received the Australian Government Mobility Grant which funded a 2-week trip as part of PetaJakarta’s Student Flood Support team.
She has also represented UOW in the International Civil Engineering Competition (2014), and has adjudicated local, state, national and international intervarsity debating competition as part of the UOW Debating Society. In 2014 she received the Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA), where in 2016 was then part of the Seminar Leadership team organising a week long residential conference for young leaders aged 17-26.
